This is exactly what happened to 16-year old Ali Lowitzer on April 26, 2010. As of this writing in 2020, Ali has yet to be found. Her mother JoAnn Lowitzer created National Missing Persons Day in an effort to bring attention to her daughters situation and highlight the plight of the over 600,000 people in the United States who go missing every year and the 4,400+ unidentified bodies recovered each year.
